Nyema Johnson-McDowell Obituary

Nyema T. Johnson-McDowell was born on September 17, 1975, in Jersey City, New Jersey. She gained her wings on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. She was the beloved daughter of the late John J. and Linda L. Johnson and is now reunited with them in eternal rest.

Nyema accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She was filled with the Holy Ghost, fire baptized, and ran for the Lord until the very end of her life. Her faith was unwavering, and she dedicated herself to serving God in every way she could. With a powerful and anointed voice, she sang in numerous choirs throughout New Jersey, touching hearts and souls with her gift of gospel music.

From July 25, 2021, to October 29, 2024, Nyema served as a worship leader and hospitality member at Life Changers Gospel Church in Newark, NJ, under the leadership of Dr. Oyebanjo Olowe. Her passion for worship and her heart for serving others made a lasting impact on the congregation.

Nyema met the love of her life, Lamont McDowell, and together they built a life filled with love and faith. She was also blessed with two wonderful stepchildren, Isaiah McDowell and Tyanna Matthew, whom she cherished dearly.

Nyema had a heart of gold and an unwavering willingness to help others. If there was ever a need, she never hesitated to lend a helping hand. Her warmth and kindness shone through in her radiant smile, and her conversations were always filled with wisdom and love.

A dedicated professional, Nyema pursued a career in healthcare. From 2009 to 2011, she earned certifications as a Medical Assistant and Dental Assistant. She was also deeply committed to her faith and education, earning a diploma from Faith Fellowship Ministries School of Bible Excellence under the leadership of Pastor David T. Demola.

Nyema’s life was a testament to faith, love, and service. She lived boldly for Christ, and her legacy of kindness, devotion, and unwavering belief will continue to inspire all who knew her. Though she is no longer with us in body, her spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched.

Cherished Family and Loved Ones

Nyema is survived by her devoted husband, Lamont McDowell, and her cherished mother-in-law, Daisy Warren. She leaves behind her beloved stepchildren, Isaiah McDowell and Tyanna Matthew, as well as her special godchildren, William Walker, Brandon Miles, and Timothy Williams.

Nyema was a loving and dedicated sister to Tashieka Johnson-Badie (Zollern Badie), whose unwavering love and devotion to her sister were unmatched. She was also a caring aunt to her nephew, Tyler Thornton, and a proud great-aunt to Amari, Tahj, and Josiah Thornton, and her precious great-niece, Blessyn Henry.

She shared a special bond with her cousin-sisters, Shantel Lawrence and Rachena Johnson, and her cousin-brother, Carl Patterson.

Nyema was blessed with a circle of god-sisters, Shannon Bates, Debra Malone, and Tia Easterling, and a sisterhood of lifelong friends, including Dolores Bethea, Aisha Henderson-Berry, Dana Royster, Tamara Kittrell, Janine Banks, and Dr. Cheryl Reed.

She had a deep and unwavering prayer life and shared a special spiritual connection with her cousin, Melvin Jones, with whom she often prayed and sought God's presence.

She also shared a deep and meaningful connection with her special cousins, Monique Johnson and Ming Deas, as well as a host of beloved family members and dear friends, all of whom she loved wholeheartedly.

Among those dearest to her heart was her lifetime friend and confidant, Lamar Lassiter, whose friendship was a constant source of love and support throughout her life.

A Life Well Lived

Nyema’s presence was a beacon of light to all who knew her. She walked in faith, loved unconditionally, and gave selflessly. Her legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those she loved and inspired.

Though we grieve her passing, we take comfort in knowing that she is resting in the arms of the Lord, where there is no more pain, no more sorrow, and no more tears—only eternal joy and peace.

Final Sentiment
