Lucille Thomas Obituary

Lucile Thomas, the beloved daughter of the late Lucile and Henry Henderson was born and raised in Thomasville, Georgia, where she attended elementary and high school.  She eventually relocated to Jersey City, New Jersey.

Lucille married in 1956, to her lifetime love, Joseph Thomas, Sr.  From this union, this couple welcomed sons, Joseph Jr., Jessie, Johnny, and daughter, Janet.  She took on the role of a stay-at-home wife and mother until the death of her husband in 1983.

Lucille worked for Sacred Heart School, where she served as cafeteria staff from 1984 until 1990.  Lucille then took on the role of Culinary Manager at Sonesta Suites, where she worked for 30 years before retiring in 2020.  Lucille also held roles as a Transitional Case Worker at St. Lucy’s Shelter and later, Hope House Women and Children’s Shelter.  During her employment tenure, Lucille worked seven days a week, which demonstrated attributes of sacrifice and strength.  Through possessing roles in hospitality, Lucille has managed to build lasting relationships with coworkers and clients.

Lucille was also a woman of God, and showed so with the upbringing of her family.  Lucille began attending First Wesleyan Church in Jersey City, NJ in the 1960s, and served as a Sunday School Teacher and a member of the choir.  She is known by her children and grandchildren for her saying, “I don’t care if you’re up all Saturday night, but you better make sure that you’re in church at 9:45 for Sunday School.”

The Lord blessed Lucille with many gifts and talents that she graciously used to spread his love.  She frequently joined Pastor Brenda Singleton with missionary and outreach ministry.

Some of Lucille’s favorite hobbies were cooking soul food dishes and making delicious desserts.  She also loved singing and planting flowers and vegetables. She loved going on vacations around the world, causing panic followed by laughs from her family.  There was one instance where she disappeared for several days, which resulted in us calling her phone to find out that she was on a Royal Caribbean cruise.

As the seasons change, so does life.  We will surely miss her in all aspects of our lives.  To say that Lucille was known and loved by many is an understatement.   We love her, and will never stop missing and remembering her.

Lucille was preceded in death by her beloved husband Joseph Thomas, Sr., her parents, Lucile and Henry Henderson, her beloved daughter Janet Thomas-Miller, and her cherished son Jessie Thomas.

Quietly in the afternoon hours on April 10, 2023, God sent His angels to bring His daughter home.  Lucille leaves precious memories to her sons Joseph Thomas, Jr. and Johnny Thomas, her grandchildren, Gerald Jamar Miller, Jessie O’Neal, Jameece Miller, Joseph Miller, Johnny Malachi Thomas II, great-grandchildren, Jaivon Smalls, Jasmine Smalls, Eric Thomas, Aaliyah Capers, extended family, The Geathers,  The Gibsons, The Harmons, The Forbes, The Jacksons, and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
