OBITUARY
Geraldine Delores Small, also known by the names Deanie and Gerri, was born on February 6, 1954 in Jersey City, New Jersey. She departed this life on September 4, 2024 at the age of 70 years old.
Geraldine grew up in Jersey City in Booker T Projects, and later settled in Plainfield, New Jersey. She graduated from Public School No. 22 and Lincoln High School, and pursued Women’s Studies at New Jersey State College. Geraldine previously worked at Provident Bank and was gainfully employed at Hudson County Welfare Department until she retired.
Geraldine was religious and faith-based. Geraldine grew up attending Zion Baptist Church and later attended and joined Welcome Baptist where she was an active church member and regarded as a Church Mother.
She volunteered at the church and participated in teaching Bible School. After relocating to Plainfield, she attended Mount Olive Baptist Church.
Geraldine loved sports. When she wasn’t rooting for her favorite sports team the Jets she enjoyed spending time with family and attending family gatherings. She was a great bowler, loved music and dancing, enjoyed watching movies, reading and completing word searches.
Geraldine was a beautiful, welcoming, generous and loving woman. She was a nurturer and followed the belief that it takes a village to raise a child, providing support to many as a mother figure. She was very insightful and would share wisdom, advice, and motherly insight to all.
Her knowledge and experience were vast and applicable. She created meaningful and unforgettable experiences in the lives of many, always thinking of others.
Geraldine loved all her family dearly and reserved a special place in her heart for her children and grandchildren. She also maintained close life-long relationships with her childhood friends.
Geraldine was predeceased by her mother Laverne Johnson and father Edward Small, Aunt Delores Lewis and Uncle James Lewis, Sister Diana Yorker and Nephew Jerome Yorker.
Geraldine and Virgil Mba had two children together they love and adore. She leaves surviving her son Darnell and his love Sara, daughter Chinyere, grandson Marcus-James, granddaughter Leila Marie, other daughter and family Yolanda Troy, Desmond, Jahlil, Zymir, Jada, and Sorayah , sister Laverne Shelton and brother-in-law Robert Shelton and nieces Michelle, Lynn Ann, Andrea, and nephew Robert Shelton, Jr., nephew Randal Yorker and wife Carmen and family Jade, Diamond, & Ivory, niece Valerie Yorker and son Terrence, cousins James Lewis Jr., Irving Lewis and Josephine, Wayne Lewis and Valerie.
Geraldine was a matriarch of the family and a phenomenal woman. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt and friend, and she will be missed.
