Cornell Gleaton, Jr. Obituary

Cornell Gleaton Jr., was born at the Margaret Hague Hospital in Jersey City NJ, on August 20,1962, to Bertha and Cornell Gleaton Sr. He attended Public School #2, # 37 and James J Ferris High School. Cornell Jr, worked at several locations in Jersey City and Bayonne, and loved jobs which required extensive cleaning.

He loved to cook, and look good by dressing nice and very neat and smell good at all times.  He also loved to eat good foods and loved sweets.

In his younger years, Cornell Jr. was one to contend with on the basketball courts, and he took great pride in his skills. He was left-handed, and considered by his friends and peers, as one of the best left-handed basketball players in Jersey City. He played for St. Michael’s Jersey City CYO. They played opposing teams near and far, playing in tournaments where they normally won because of his “take no prisoners “attitude”. He was always the star player winning MVP on most occasions, acquiring many trophies for his accomplishments. Cornell also played for the Junior Varsity team at Ferris High School.

He was an avid swimmer, often swimming with friends, jumping in pools from high places. He had a daring spirit.

He was a die-hard sports fan on the professional level. He was “Michael Jordan’s” #1 fan for life. His favorite team was the Chicago Bulls until Michael Jordan retired.  In recent years, he was a fan of the Golden State Warriors, and the Brooklyn Nets, but loved watching all the teams, especially during the playoffs. He loved football, being a San Francisco 49ers fan, also was a fan of wrestling in which he often watched on television.

Cornell was very popular with people of all ages and walks of life, he had an easy-going attitude, with that killer smile and dimples to warm your heart, and a great personality to match.

Cornell Jr was known to his family members as “Junior”, while friends from the downtown Jersey City area knew him as “Bonds” and later those in the Greenville area knew him as “Aziz” or “Unc” from the younger group.

He fought back from many battles in his life, he even fought a tough battle with Covid in the early days of the pandemic but managed to always land on his feet. While he fought a good fight in the recent months, God saw that he was tired and had no fight left to give. On Friday April 8, 2022, the fight was over, and he was called home to be with the Lord.

Cornell leaves to mourn, his only child, daughter Janaya Gleaton-Watson, and two grandchildren, Nylah, and Kash Khattim Aziz, his 93-year-old Mother, Bertha Gleaton, who he loved dearly, being what she calls “her baby boy”. His siblings, who always stood by him, James, Sue, Mary, Rosa, Bertha, Barbara Gleaton and Dawn Gleaton- Loftin. He also had a special nephew, growing up in the same household, Kareem Walston.

Cornell is preceded in death by his father, Cornell Gleaton Sr., oldest sister, Martha Britton, and 2 brothers, Charles, and Jerome Gleaton. His brother-in-law, William Britton and 2 nephews, Leonza and Fuquaan Gleaton. He also leaves to mourn his nieces and nephews who thought the world of him, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Cornell was greatly loved by many and will be missed by all.
