Charles Newton was born on March 27, 1940 in Valdosta, GA to the parents of the late Frank Morris Newton, Sr. and Lucille Smith Newton. Charles was one of 9 children born to this union. In the early morning hours on Saturday June 17th Charles made his transition to the heavenly realm after a long illness. Charles is preceded in death by three sisters: Nancy Fluit, Evelyn Sherman and Ruth Hardy, and three brothers: Ben Newton, Nathaniel Newton and Frank Newton, Jr. In 1967, as a young teenager, Charles migrated to Northern Jersey and became employed with Corrugated Box Company in Bayonne New Jersey. He was later employed with the Pepsi-Cola Company. He was the first African-American hired as permanent staff in their 30 year history at that time, and soon moved up as top salesman. Charles had a special talent for bowling. During the early 70s’ he joined the Kegler Bowling Club entering championship matches across Northern New Jersey. KBC crowned him as “King Charles” after maintaining the longest top prize winner in their league. Soon thereafter, he and a group of friends created their own bowling club called the Soul Bowlers located in Jersey City. After an early retirement, Charles became a member of the Weequahic Golf Course and more recently served on as staff. He was an entrepreneur and a successful business owner of Newton’s Grocery store in Newark for more than 8 years which served the community well. Charles had a big heart. He was always willing to help anyone who was in need. He leaves to mourn his life one son, Staven Newton, two daughters: Tanya Newton and Beverly Bailey-Grant; one brother Samuel Newton (Edna); 5 grandchildren; nieces Delores Brown (Paul, Sr.) and Vermia Newton; nephews Ralph Newton (Lavonia) and Floyd Newton, devoted aunt: Florence Newton Fowler of Valdosta, GA.; dear friend: Carol James, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, friends and friends of the golf community in New Jersey and in Georgia.
